A 19-year-old girl was killed in a fatal car accident on Interstate 80 in Will County on Sunday, police said.

At around 6:25 a.m. on Sunday, a 19-year-old girl from Shorewood was driving east on Interstate 80 at Milepost 128.5 when she left a 64-year-old man behind.

According to the police, the 19-year-old’s vehicle ran off the right of the lane and hit a tree, while the man’s vehicle hit a cable lock to the left of the lane.

The girl was taken to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead. Police did not immediately provide details of the 64-year-old’s status.

According to official reports, all eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 were closed for an initial investigation for approximately four hours. Traffic was diverted from the dual carriageway on Houbolt Road.

Interstate 80 was fully reopened at 10:40 a.m., police said.
