SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The deputy director of Lowell High School in San Francisco was hospitalized with serious injuries after an unusual accident on Interstate 80 on Memorial Day.

Friends and colleagues were shocked to learn that Assistant Headmistress Holly Giles was the victim of the accident and was in intensive care at an East Bay hospital.

Police say an SUV traveling west on Interstate 80 near Appian Way in Pinole somehow lost a tire. The tire flew over the middle sheath and hit a vehicle on the east side, causing a crash.

The tire was thrown back and forth in collisions, hit and damaged three other vehicles traveling on I-80, and caused accidents in both directions. The third vehicle hit by the tire suffered significant damage to the windshield and roof, according to the police.

Ms. Giles suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital where she is located.
