FISHKILL – Last Wednesday afternoon, Edwin “Eddie” Ramirez was killed in a car accident on Route 9D in Fishkill. State Police said Ramirez was driving in the southbound lane when the Chevrolet Equinox he was driving pulled into the northbound lane and pulled into a school bus for reasons unknown.

The accident occurred between Red Schoolhouse and Baxtertown Roads around 1:30 p.m. Paramedics pronounced Ramirez dead at the scene of the accident.

According to the Wappingers Central School District, there were no students on the bus at the time of the accident. The bus driver was rushed to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Ramirez was the CEO of R&M Promotions and Entertainment, which has hosted numerous Latin festivals in the Hudson Valley over the years.

Along with his wife Norma, he was also the founder of the Hudson Valley Latino Scholarship Program in 1991. For the past two decades, the two recognized between eight and ten students each year.

During the ceremony, students received a plaque, flowers and a cash award for their higher education. You would also hear inspirational words from a guest speaker.

“This is a different kind of scholarship,” said Eddie Ramirez during the 2019 annual awards ceremony. “As Latinos, we care about your education and see you as future leaders.”

The scholarship was one way the proud father and grandfather of the community and his wife could give something back. With his death, it is very likely that the scholarship will now bear his name.
