A lack of oxygen in the joints or hypoxia is characteristic of RA and can worsen inflammation and stiffness of the joints. The massage relieves tension by increasing the oxygen-rich blood flow. This in turn reduces pain and inflammation. Once the oxygen flows, the anti-inflammatory properties of the oxygen have a calming effect. A study by the University of Miami Medical School found that a weekly massage with moderate pressure relieved pain, increased grip strength, and improved joint movement.
