One person died after being hit by a car in Oelwein.

The accident occurred on Tuesday evening (May 11) at around 5.45 p.m. in a parking lot at 108 1st Street SW in Oelwein.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, a pedestrian crouched in front of a vehicle. When the driver tried to exit the parking lot, the car hit the pedestrian.

The pedestrian, a 54-year-old resident of Oelwein, was taken to the MercyOne hospital in Oelwein, where the victim was pronounced dead.

No names have been released yet, and the accident continues to be investigated by the Iowa State Patrol, with assistance from the Oelwein Police Department.
