Too often divorce is a harrowing, utterly devastating experience that takes years to recover. Even just hearing the word divorce creates negative feelings. Family law attorney and divorce doula Maria Akopyan, founder of Dignified Divorce Coaching, hopes to change the way we view and deal with divorce. Akopyan takes a holistic view of the process to help clients control the process without wasting time or money, and without irreversibly damaging their emotional and mental health.

Akopyan has a wide range of knowledge and training in family law, divorce proceedings, psychology, life counseling, and training in marriage and family therapy. After working with divorced couples in court and viewing divorce as a weapon, she knew there had to be a better way. Akopyan reflects on the first couple she experienced, what she calls a “beautiful divorce” and how that experience inspired her to take a different approach.

“They’ve been so positive, so caring throughout the whole thing, like they’re not getting a divorce. In the end they just shook hands and moved on. I want more people to have this experience, make it less traumatic, and see that there are ways to make the divorce process less harmful. “Akopyan is there to guide people towards a more positive divorce outcome. It helps to transform the pain into its “greatest awakening”.

Akopyan takes a completely unique and new approach than the rest of the divorce law industry that is carried out by no one else. With her many areas of expertise, she cannot just delve into legal processes and paperwork and show people how divorce can be a journey of personal growth rather than a process fueled by devastation, anger, and extreme emotions.

As a certified life and divorce trainer, Akopyan works primarily with women who are just beginning the divorce process. Instead of representing them in court, she guides them through the transition of divorce, helping them to be empowered, triumphant, and ready to live a life that is representative of who they really are.

Divorce is both the end of something and the beginning of something else. Akopyan is focused on empowering clients to make informed decisions, focus on what they want over the long term, and help shape a divorce that will serve them positively.

Clients receive a unique program that provides a blueprint for the divorce process and comprehensive support for parenting, self-care, growth, and happiness together after divorce. Akopyan currently offers individual coaching services as well as an online coaching program called Divorcing With Dignity.

This is a comprehensive program that provides a step-by-step process for a smooth and peaceful divorce, including a self-study course, weekly live group coaching, and a support community.

Akopyan was born in Armenia and came to the United States with her family as a child. Growing up in a family that worked hard to make it to a new country, she never missed an opportunity. Akopyan has a lifelong interest in psychology and law. She attended UCLA for her bachelor’s degree and then attended law school in Costa Mesa, California.

She later studied marriage and family therapy at Alliant International University. After Akopyan had a child in 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic forced changes in her legal practice, she decided to try full-time trying to help women positively move through divorce and reinvent themselves while they were at the same time realized her dream of starting her own company.
