Are you looking for alternative wellness techniques to improve your self-care game? We examine the most popular holistic trends from the past year
One can rightly say that we have all wished for a little more peace, security and inner peace in our lives over the past year. Forced lockdowns and social restrictions give many people more time to reflect on their health and wellbeing, and many have a new interest in holistic wellbeing and spirituality.
Yes, 2020 was the year we all started baking banana bread and exercising at home, but according to Google search data, it was also the year we really started to think about ourselves – mind, body and Soul.
A year after the UK’s first national lockdown, fashion retailer Kaleidoscope has revealed the biggest wellness trends of the past year. You have figured out how the UK has started to show a more holistic approach to our own wellbeing and care that is expected to last through 2021 and beyond.
What is Holistic Wellbeing?
Holistic health and wellbeing is the practice of treating the whole person – mind, body and spirit.
Modern healthcare usually focuses on treating specific (usually physical) symptoms. However, a more holistic approach to wellbeing aims to address the root cause of our problems and provide preventative practices.

Holistic practices for the mind
With many of us having to adjust our plans and rethink our life goals over the past year, affirmations are a big trend emerging. Used in overcoming sabotage and negative thoughts, affirmations are positive statements that, if repeated often, can help you make positive changes in your life. Since 2019, the search for “affirmative words” has increased by an enormous 125%.
Similarly, manifestations that bring something into your life through attraction and belief have grown in popularity significantly.
“Manifesting is the universal law of attraction, ‘thoughts become things,’ and the way we think, thought patterns, and act can bring tangible things into our lives,” says Grace Victory, columnist at Happiful.
“We have the ability to manifest anything – a car, a vacation, a relationship, a job. But the hard part is we have to:
- Do you really believe we deserve everything we try to manifest.
- Really be grateful for what we have right now. “
It is believed that the popularity of this holistic practice was aided by a viral tik tok trend. And since 2019, the search for 3-6-9 manifestations has increased an astonishing 15,900%.

Another popular wellness trend over the past year is breath work. Possibly spurred on by the increasing search for tips to relax and sleep, breathing techniques can have a positive effect on a person’s mental, emotional, and physical state. Since 2019, searches for Dutch atomic expert Wim Hof have increased by 311%.
Wellness guru Simone of Yoga with Simone says the benefits of breathing techniques are enormous. “Some help access the parasympathetic nervous system, which makes us feel calm and relaxed. Some help us recharge our batteries, others help balance our emotions and our bodies so we can feel a little more grounded.
“Regardless of which technique we choose, even if we just become more conscious of the inhalations and exhalations, each of them allows the mind to relax and enables us to respond more clearly, decisively, and rationally.”
Holistic wellbeing for the body
It’s no surprise that online interest in home workouts has grown dramatically over the past year. With people desperate for fitness equipment, searches have increased 233% since 2019 as people want to turn their home into a makeshift gym.
However, many also turned to exercises that usually do not require any equipment at all – such as yoga and Pilates. Yes, in the last year the demand for such workouts has increased. Searches for “yoga for beginners at home” increased 175% and for “pilates for beginners at home” increased 136%.
Parents even tried to get their kids to burn off pent-up energy, and searches for ‘Cosmic Kids Yoga’ increased 234%.
Holistic practices for the soul
The past year has given many of us the opportunity to do a little soul search to find inner peace. Spiritual and soulful practices are becoming increasingly popular to help people dig a little deeper to maintain their wellbeing.
Since 2019, meditation searches have increased 49%, especially morning meditations by 52%. The practice of using techniques to focus the mind on a specific object, thought, or activity in order to achieve an emotionally calm state is something we are huge fans of here at Happiful.
Here we bring you a guided meditation that will take you on a stroll through an orchard to a peaceful beach:
Another increasing trend are crystals, where the search volume for crystals such as selenite, aventurine and smoky quartz has increased by 50% in the past year. Crystals are considered to be a great way to encourage the flow of good energy in the body. They are touted as an ancient form of medicine and many are turning to them again today.

Chakras have also enjoyed increasing popularity since 2019. The search for sudarshan chakras, sacral chakras, and manipura chakras has increased by at least 85%. Regarding energy points in your body, chakras are believed to rotate discs of energy in our body that when aligned will have a positive effect on our emotional and physical wellbeing.
“Chakras have been around for millennia and they are becoming more popular every day,” says holistic therapist Mel Garcia.
“When you focus your attention on the chakras, you can improve your life physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Chakras really enable you to understand your body as a whole and to take control of your own wellbeing. “
Nobody could have predicted how COVID-19 would change our view of wellness. However, if we can get anything out of the past year, it is important to open our minds to how we are maintaining our health, both mentally and physically.
