The University of Brunei Darussalam (UBD) offers a comprehensive, holistic education that focuses on broad, student-centered, experiential learning to prepare students for the future. The undergraduate programs include the Discovery Year, where students spend a year studying abroad, doing an internship, incubating, or completing a Community Outreach Project (COP) to provide students with skills that go beyond the classroom environment. In addition, strong industry connections and partnerships with world-class universities strengthen teaching and research, and provide students with skills that enhance student employability.

UBD is continuously reviewing its curriculum and integrating innovations to further improve student employability. The employment rate is currently around 88 percent within 24 months of completing the degree. In the age of the fourth industrial revolution, UBD has added a digital dimension to its curriculum to ensure that graduates are digital savvy. The newest programs offered at UBD include the Bachelor of Digital Sciences with a focus on computer science, data science, artificial intelligence and robotics, as well as cybersecurity and forensics.

Another initiative to improve employability is accreditation. Two other undergraduate programs have recently been officially recognized, namely the ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) geology program and the Accreditation Board Engineering and Technology (ABET) General Engineering program in the United States. The Bachelor’s program in General Engineering was fully ABET-accredited last year and updated retrospectively from October 2017. This is the first and currently the only engineering program in Brunei Darussalam to be accredited by the prestigious ABET to ensure that UBD meets strict international standards for the production of graduates who are sustainable to develop key technical areas in the fields of innovation and new technologies . It is to be hoped that this will further increase the current employment rate from 95 percent.

Another major of the Bachelor of Engineering at UBD is chemical and process engineering, the program with the highest employment rate in the country, regardless of discipline and level. All of the UBD Chemical and Process Engineering graduates since the students first started were hired by Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd to serve various roles in the Pulau Muara Besar (PMB) Refining and Petrochemical Projects.

Other undergraduate programs in UBD include Bachelor of Health Science, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Business. The Bachelor of Health Science has an employment rate of 96 percent and hosts in-demand programs such as medicine, dentistry, and nursing. There, prospective students receive appropriate practical training and experience real scenarios via the ultra-modern simulation center.

The UBD School of Business and Economics (UBDSBE), a member of the Association of Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), offers the Bachelor of Business an employment rate of 89 percent. As of 2011, UBDSBE’s accounting and finance program has been accredited by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) professional qualifications. Entrepreneurship is the latest addition to the Bachelor of Business undergraduate program. The Master of Applied Economics is also a new program designed to train students with a mix of theoretical knowledge and work experience in the real world to prepare them for jobs in business, research and international relations.

The Bachelor of Arts with an overall employment rate of 87 percent offers a range of disciplines, most recently the interdisciplinary program Design and Creative Industries. The Faculty of Science is offering a new Master of Science in Petroleum Geosciences that addresses the needs of scientists who have already worked in the industry to improve their technical skills and qualifications. Last year, the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking placed UBD for the first time in the World’s 301-400 Volume for Physical Sciences, which includes the disciplines of Chemistry, Physics, Geology, and Mathematics and Statistics, confirming the quality of Teaching and research in the faculty.

Because of its highly effective research, UBD has filed 60 patents to date, 38 of which are in the United States. Two of these innovations were licensed to local industry in 2018 and 2020, respectively. For these innovation efforts, UBD was awarded the Clarivate South and Southeast Asia Innovation Award 2020. UBD also values incubation, especially to help students turn innovative ideas into viable businesses. Under the guidance and support of the Entrepreneurship Village (EV), UBD has produced over 300 startups. In addition, alumni members can return to campus through the UBD Startup Center (USC) established in 2019 to further develop their businesses or as mentors.

The entire UBD experience combines high quality teaching, sophisticated technology, an enabling infrastructure, and university-industry links to produce highly employable graduates. This also applies to current employees who are looking to upgrade or retrain to keep up with the ever-changing demands of different professions. The modules offered by the Center for Lifelong Learning (C3L) are ideally suited for this purpose and use blended learning to minimize interruptions in daily life. By incorporating online resources in addition to face-to-face sessions, students can learn at the pace, location, and route of their choice.
