When I was growing up, my house had a pretty strict rule that you had milk for dinner, but there were certain special occasions when my parents would have us give us soda. To this day, I can’t have a pizza night without asking for a drink that comes in a bright red can.
Fortunately, as a child, I was also unaware of the effects of added sugar on the body, especially the intestines. Research has shown that added sugar kills the good bacteria that live in the gut. A can of soda every now and then is certainly no big deal. As a health coach, it’s all about balance, and when a client tells me they’ve got a can of Dr. Pepper (or a piece of cake or biscuits …), I say, do it with it.
However, if you want to enjoy a soda every day, all of those sugars can create an imbalance in the gut that can lead to digestive problems and other health problems. (By the way, you can’t work around the problem by turning to diet sodas with artificial sweeteners.)
When I first went looking for a healthy soda, everyone I asked referred me to Kombucha. No shade to the fermented tea, but kombucha is certainly not a soda. Sure, it’s good for the gut and can be refreshing, but no one is going to confuse its taste. But in recent years, new drinks have appeared in the wellness world that actually taste very much like traditional soda. Friends, I’ve tried them all. (Hard work, right?) While many are delicious, there’s one that quenches soda cravings while actively working to improve colon health: Olipop ($ 36 for a case of 12).

Olipop is a good, healthy, high fiber soda that is great for digestion. The nutrient costs 9 grams per can and comes from various prebiotic sources, mainly chicory root and Jerusalem artichoke. It also has almost zero sugar. “At its core, Olipop is designed to increase the consumption of fiber and prebiotics through a diverse mix of plant compounds and plant extracts,” said Co-Founder Ben Goodwin to me earlier. “It is also our goal to offer a low-sugar alternative to soda through a flavor profile that people love and are familiar with.”
Of course, nobody will care how healthy it is if it doesn’t taste good, and I can tell you firsthand that Olipop does. The flavors include vintage cola, classic root beer, ginger-lemon, orange squeezer, strawberry-vanilla and cherry-vanilla. No matter what type of soda you get into, there is one that you will enjoy.
Again, sometimes all you want is a can of soda that you already know and love, and that’s fine. But for people looking for a soda that has fizziness, flavor, and lots of gut health benefits, Olipop is the one I recommend to clients and the one I jump on myself.
