The 35-year-old woman died at the scene of the accident on December 18.

A woman who worked in the island district’s planning department was killed in a traffic accident on Fidalgo Island on the evening of December 18.

Sonja M. Bratz, a 35-year-old Bellingham resident, died at the scene of the accident on State Highway 20 near the junction with Lunz Road, according to a Washington State Patrol report.

Bratz was traveling south on the freeway in 1997 when a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire hit an oncoming 2014 Honda Accord driven by 45-year-old Hope Noyes of Anacortes, the report said.

The state patrol initially reported that Bratz had crossed the center line, but later found that it was not.

Both vehicles came to rest in the southbound lane.

Noyes was injured and taken to Island Hospital. From there she was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment. The Skagit Valley Herald reported Saturday that she was in serious condition in intensive care.

The collision was reported at 7:36 p.m. Both drivers were buckled up.

The State Patrol reported that it is unknown why Bratz crossed the center line, but the collision is under investigation.

According to the report, it is not known whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the accident.
