A Cascade County search and rescue team member and his son were killed and a woman and two children were hospitalized Saturday morning after a car accident between Belt and Great Falls.

Tyler Weir, 35) and son Wyatt Weir, 10, died after an accident involving two vehicles near mile marker 82 on US Highway 89 around 8:45 a.m. Jennifer Weir has been taken to the Great Falls Benefis Health System and is in serious condition with two other children, ages 6 and 8, Cascade County Sheriff Jesse Slaughter said at a news conference Saturday afternoon.

The children were flown to Seattle Harborview Medical Center for life and are in critical condition.

Details of the accident were not immediately available, and the condition of the occupants in the second vehicle was not immediately released on Saturday. The Montana Highway Patrol is leading the investigation.

Tyler was the vice-commander of Cascade County Search and Rescue and was a sergeant with 13 years experience in the Montana Air National Guard. Jennifer was also a member of the search and rescue team and a secretary to the board of directors.

“At this point, I would just ask everyone to keep the thoughts and prayers of the Weir family and members of the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office, the Montana Highway Patrol, and the Montana Air National Guard,” said Slaughter. “The most important thing for me and I know for Col. (Trace) Thomas (from MANG) that we take care of the families. That will be our goal at this point. We know the Montana Highway Patrol investigation is in good hands. But right now it’s important that we take care of the families that are involved. “
