Moscow, June 1, 2021 – Nornickel, the world’s largest producer of palladium and premium nickel and a major producer of platinum and copper, announces that its board of directors has adopted the company’s overall environmental strategy.

This comprehensive plan will be introduced in all Nornickel operations from 2021. It was developed with a clear focus on achieving measurable and achievable results in order to significantly improve the company’s environmental performance. The strategy follows a detailed stakeholder engagement and a benchmarking audit based on important environmental goals.

The new strategy covers the six main areas of environmental impact, namely climate change; Air; Water; Spoil and waste; Country; and biodiversity, coupled with stakeholder engagement and communication, all of which are at the heart of Nornickel’s environmental activities.

Overall, the strategy identifies 21 central goals in the areas of sustainability and occupational safety. This includes reducing SO2 -Emissions, adherence to the principles of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and implementation of the principles of the Global Tailings Standard.

The most important initiatives to achieve these goals include the implementation of the sulfur program; Water recycling and reuse; Soil remediation; Asset monitoring; Assessment of the impact on biodiversity in all areas affected by the company’s business; Investing in green technologies and decarbonization activities.

Nornickel is also renewing its environmental governance structure to improve risk management processes and ensure effective implementation of the strategy. In accordance with this goal, the company creates departments for sustainable development, ecology, occupational safety and health, personnel and social policy at group level and ensures that all Nornickel employees are part of this transformation process.

Nornickel’s CEO Gareth Penny commented:

“The Board of Directors commends management efforts to implement the most significant revision of Nornickel’s environmental strategy in history. The holistic environmental strategy is a sign that Nornickel has made a strong commitment to the environment and promotes responsible business practices at all corporate levels in order to become the world’s leading metallurgical company. For me personally, one of the highlights of the strategy is the ambitious decarbonization program, the important step towards green metals. “
