Car accidents are a tragedy that we deal with every day. In the United States, we lose an average of 90 people to car accidents every day. Tragically, most collision-related deaths are preventable. Public awareness campaigns and traffic monitoring are important tools for changing dangerous driving behavior. Preliminary figures for 2021 show that the number of road deaths rose in the first three months of 2021.

If you lost a loved one in a car accident to the negligent or reckless behavior of another, you may be eligible for compensation through a car accident claim. A personal injury attorney can explain your statutory rights and help you obtain full and fair compensation for your losses.

NSC: Vehicle deaths rise in the first three months of 2021

Preliminary monthly estimates of road deaths in 2021 show that the number of road deaths has increased by 18 percent compared to the previous year. Since stay at home orders were in effect in March 2020, the number of kilometers driven was 13.2 percent lower than in 2019. In March 2021, traffic increased 19 percent from the previous year, but that was still 3, 5 percent less than in 2019.

According to the NSC, road deaths are estimated at 9,420 from January to March 2021. This preliminary estimate represents an increase of 10 percent compared to 2020 and an increase of 12 percent compared to 2019. The preliminary estimate of motor vehicle deaths in March 2021 is 3,260; that is 18 percent more than March 2020 and 10 percent more than 2019. In addition, March is the ninth of the last 10 months in which the number of road deaths has increased compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, the kilometers driven must be included in the equation to get a clear picture of the trends. Since the kilometers driven in March 2021 increased compared to the kilometers driven in March 2020, the monthly death rate for kilometers even fell by 0.8 percent. In addition, vehicle deaths actually decreased in the first three months of the year in 11 states compared to the first three months of 2020.

The leading causes of death in motor vehicles

While the data we looked at today does not assess the cause of the accidents, previous research provides information about the most likely main causes.

The most common causes of death in motor vehicles are:

• Driving under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, or prescription drugs
• Failure to use seat belts
• Driving while you are tired or upset
• Driving at night and in unsafe road conditions such as snow storms
• Driving an unsafe vehicle, e.g. B. one with defective brakes

We owe a duty of care to others, not to mention ourselves, when we get behind the wheel, and that means making responsible decisions that reduce the risk of a fatal car accident.
