An Owasco woman was seriously injured when a truck pulled into the back of her car in Sennett on Thursday.

Cayuga County Sheriff Michael Wellauer said Friday the incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of East Genesee Street Road and Beech Road.

Wellauer said Susan D. Welch, 54, of Owasco, was traveling west when she slowed or stopped the jeep she operated in 2021 to turn left on Beech Road.

The other driver, Nicholas D. Fischer, 32, from Seneca Falls, was also driving west in a small white van. It was found that Fischer did not stop and the truck plowed into Welch’s vehicle in the back. Wellauer said the reason Fischer didn’t stop has not yet been clarified.

Welch was rushed to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse with serious injuries. Wellauer said Fischer was also taken to Upstate, but his injuries certainly weren’t as serious. The investigation was still ongoing on Friday.

Wellauer said the sheriff’s office had been assisted by state police, Sennett and Auburn Fire Brigades, the AMR ambulance, the SAVES ambulance, Cayuga County’s 911 dispatchers, and Cayuga County’s Emergency Management.

State Department of Environmental Conservation staff responded to deal with the fuel that spilled from the truck.
