TikTok’s face cupping trend gave me the best shine ever

TikTok beauty fans can’t get enough of clever trends and techniques that promise to transform skin in moments, and it’s safe to say that all of us are delighted. Right now, facial cupping has a moment – and after the countless tutorials flooding the app, the results are impressive to say the least. What is cupping on the face? Although cupping is big at TikTok right now, the tech isn’t new. In fact, it has been popular in Chinese and Middle Eastern medicine for centuries. With cupping therapy of the body, glass or silicone cups are placed on either wet or dry skin, which creates a suction effect. This brings blood to the surface of the skin and is said to relax muscles and potentially relieve back and neck pain. Cupping on the face is a little gentler and involves much smaller cups (again usually silicone or glass) that create a drag on the skin. “It has become a recent trend in facial treatment for the cup to apply pressure to draw nutrients to the surface of the skin for healthier looking skin,” said Ioannis Liakas, medical director and skin specialist at Vie Aesthetics. At TikTok, the cups are used in conjunction with skin care products such as facial oils, serums or masks that help them glide easily over the skin. @ohdiarie some really ugly faces yikes, too the oil was for cupping! #skincare #myskincare #cupping #facecupping #skincareobsessed #skin #skinhacks #massage ♬ Original sound – 𝕾𝖊𝖑𝖎𝖓𝖆🦋✨ What are the skin-care benefits of cupping on the face? Much like using a jade roller or gua sha tool, TikToker love the cupping technique for the face to relax tense facial muscles, especially along the jaw, and claim that it is beneficial to the skin when combined with radiation-inducing skin care products such as Vitamin C or rose hip oil. It’s a favorite among experts too: top facial specialist Antonia Burrell loves cupping on the face for a temporary lift, while Dr. Liakas highlights his potential for contouring and shaping cheekbones and de-puff skin. Some TikTok skin care enthusiasts anecdotally claim that cupping on the face helps minimize fine lines, wrinkles and scars, and stimulates collagen. How to do face cupping at home and how does it work? Inspired by TikTok’s skincare enthusiast (and spurred on by how badly my dull skin needs a shine boost after the winter), I had to try cupping on my face. I opted for the Skin Gym Facial Cupping Set, which includes two medium-sized face cups (for cheeks, chin and forehead) and two micro-cups that perform better on the nose, eyes and lips. Cupping on the face works best when combined with skin care products so that the cups slide smoothly over the skin. I actually found it quite difficult to use the cups without the product as they keep flaking off my skin. By applying moisturizer, serum, or face oil, they can get their job done with ease. Face oils seem to be a popular product for TikTok, but Dr. Liakas mentions that if you’re prone to breakouts, they could clog your pores and spread bacteria. He likes vitamin C serums for facial cupping, but says hyaluronic acid serums are also an option and are beneficial for all skin types. You can also use a moisturizer for more slip. I have oily, acne-prone skin, so I chose a light serum: Farmacy Very Cherry Bright 15% clean vitamin C serum. A little goes a long way to create a smooth base on the skin. Dr. Liakas says keeping the skin taut when you wipe the cups over your face is important and recommends cleaning your skin afterward. This is because cupping is more of a DIY facial than an actual skincare step. Then just follow your usual skin care regimen. I started with the miniature cups and focused them on areas where I want a little lift that is around my eyes and above my eyebrows. The suction was very gentle and the product was quickly absorbed as I slid the cups over my skin. Although I didn’t notice an immediate difference in firmness, I saw a change in the skin around the nose and lips, which is always quite swollen when I wake up in the morning. @jacquelinekilikita I tried #facialcupping and it gave me a glowing, post-facial flush. Here are all of the major skin benefits. #facecupping ♬ original sound – Jacqueline Kilikita I have the large cups concentrated along my jaw which holds a lot of tension as I sometimes grind my teeth when I am stressed or anxious. I found the suction to be really calming and relaxing (more so than my trusted Gua Sha tool), and after five minutes of sliding the tool over my skin, any tension was completely released. After a total of 10 minutes, it felt like my face had been treated and massaged by a professional facial doctor. The only difference is the price – and the fact that I didn’t have to leave my bedroom. I loved the natural glow it also gave my skin, almost as if I’d just come in from a brisk walk in the cold. As a result, I skipped foundation and blush and just applied a little concealer for the rest of the day. Are There Any Side Effects Of DIY Cupping On The Face? DIY cupping is unlikely to leave the big tell-tale marks on your face when you do professional cupping – especially if you use more skin-friendly silicone cups – but it pays to be as gentle as possible. In contrast to skin care products such as pore vacuum cleaners, the pulling of facial mugs is relatively low, so broken capillaries or blood vessels are rare, although Dr. Liakas says they are not excluded. As with all new skin care tools and techniques, be careful, especially when deciding on a glass set. Using cupping tools on broken skin is not a good idea as it can cause further irritation. Dr. Liakas also suggests avoiding the technique if you are sunburned or if your skin has recently been exposed to the sun. If you have rosacea, sensitive skin, active acne, or use retinol and suffer from flaking or tenderness, Dr. Liakas to miss the cupping for the time being. @fferlopez Face Cupping Benefits ⚡️ # Face Cupping # Face Massage # Skincare # Skin ♬ Steven Universe – L.Dre What Are The Best Cupping Sets For The Face? Aside from Skin Gym, there are a handful of other expert-approved cupping sets for the face. The popular glass WTHN Face Cups are designed to promote blood circulation and relax tense muscles. Antonia Burrell Facial In A Box contains a mini cleansing oil, a lotion, a mask, a face oil and a moisturizer, as well as a large and a miniature cupping tool for treating all areas of the face. I thought I would find cupping on the face a waste of time, but there’s no denying that it is a reward when done right. If you love skin care and are looking for ways to indulge yourself at home, this is a simple, effective, and affordable technique that deserves my stamp of approval.
