The Supreme Court on Friday called on the Rajasthan government to respond to rape convict Asaram Bapu’s plea for permission to receive treatment at an Ayurveda center near Haridwar in Uttarakhand.

A bank under the direction of Judge BR Gavai made it clear that it was not inclined to grant a two-month temporary bail by suspension of his sentence in order to enable him to receive “holistic” treatment of his multiple complaints in a medical center of his choice Government of Rajasthan and released the matter for hearing on Tuesday.

Asaram was arrested in Indore and taken to Jodhpur on September 1, 2013. He has been in custody since September 2, 2013.

A Jodhpur court sentenced Asaram to life imprisonment on April 25, 2018, after convicting him of raping a teenager at his ashram in 2013. His accomplices Sharad and Shilpi were sentenced to 20 years in prison in the same case. He was also found guilty of a rape case in 2002 and sentenced to 20 years in prison. In Surat, Gujarat, he is also confronted with a rape case.

Asaram has challenged the Rajasthan Supreme Court order to reject his plea for suspension of sentence for treatment.

“I’m here on bail. I am an 83 year old male serving a life sentence and there was a history of medical complaints, ”said Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra on behalf of his client Asaram Bapu.Give him two months to recover. This is the limited relief I am looking for. Today he needs holistic treatment, ”he said.

“We are not medical experts,” said the bank, telling the Rajasthan government.
