Preventing accidents and injuries is just as important as treating athletes seeking chiropractic care
Since DD Palmer’s first adaptation of chiropractic in 1895, chiropractic has been viewed as a modality that helps patients heal. “Many decades ago, doctors and patients noticed that chiropractic not only allowed them to feel better and get rid of pain, but they also realized that it could help people recover faster from their injuries,” says Tabor Smith , DC, owner of Pure Life Family Wellness in Houston, Texas. “It wasn’t long after this realization that the sports industry also found out about it.”
One reason injury prevention is so important to athletes is that injuries prevent them from competing for long, which costs professional athletes and teams money, says Smith. “Depending on the type of injury, there could even be a retirement,” he added.
This problem is made even more complex by the fact that some of the most commonly used recovery options include surgery and medication. While these agents are sometimes an effective option for athletes, “the amount of improvement that one can make through only medication and surgery is limited,” says Smith. This has led many athletes to turn to chiropractic instead.

“Just a few decades ago, sports organizations recognized that chiropractic care can not only get an athlete back on the roster faster, but that consistent chiropractic exams and adjustments can actually prevent many injuries,” says Smith. “An athlete whose body has normal biomechanics, alignment, and joint function will suffer far fewer injuries than an athlete who is not in the correct shape or alignment.”

“For a serious athlete, injury prevention is far more valuable than recovery from one,” says Smith. “When you add that regular chiropractic care can not only help prevent injury but also maximize performance, it makes a very compelling case.”
Chiropractic becomes even more compelling when you consider that some of the greatest athletes in the world rely on this modality for their health care. Case in point: The American Chiropractic Association reports that approximately 90% of world-class athletes are currently engaged in chiropractic care to prevent accidents and injuries and to improve performance.
“There’s a reason virtually every professional sports team now has a chiropractor on their team,” says Smith. “For a professional sports program, the health and longevity of your athletes have top priority.”
Make chiropractic a part of a healthy lifestyle
“Chiropractic will always be great for helping people recover from injuries,” says Smith. “No matter what activity a person participates in, they are much better off incorporating chiropractic into their lifestyle. It is definitely true what they say, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
