An afternoon weather-related accident in the south town sent a 28-year-old Effingham man to Amberwell Atchison for emergency care by ambulance to treat the injuries.

At around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 20, Atchison Police officers responded to the accident with injuries on the 1300 block of South US 73 Highway, Police Chief Mike Wilson said. There, officials discovered that a 2010 Nissan Sentra, driven by Jessica Figaniak of Effingham, was traveling north along US 73 when the vehicle hydroplanetized after heavy rainfall. Figaniak’s vehicle crossed the median into the south lanes and into the path of an oncoming 2013 Honda SUV driven by Matthew Greeno of Kansas City.

Keith Damon, Effingham, a passenger in a Figaniak vehicle, was removed from the car after Atchison Firefighters’ Jaws of Life removed a vehicle door to allow first responders to get him out of the vehicle . After Damon was freed from the car, Atchison County ambulance workers transported him to Amberwell Atchison for treatment.

Wilson reported that all three occupants were buckled up at the time of impact. The two drivers escaped injury. Both vehicles were disabled and had to be towed away from the scene.
